Hello world! As a member that is new of web log team, we am so excited to share with you many of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. When I talk to my buddies and family members about my job, they often ask questions like ‘what do you are doing on a daily foundation?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summer?’ I’m hoping that through my additions that are monthly this weblog, you’ll get an improved concept of what we do each day as admission counselors.
Therefore let’s begin with the present. This morning I woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early to some, reasonable to others, but I can inform you, this at 7:45 have always been, I became exhausted (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. morning) The truth is, my trip from Los Angeles was designed to reach Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (to be exact.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you maybe not,) my trip was delayed three hours. Luckily, my first school see this morning constantly has coffee waiting I was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila! for me, and) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the learning students came prepared. They asked great questions and I think we just stuttered a few times.
I had some time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for many morning meal and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 minutes prior to a trip, but often i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Thankfully, my car’s atmosphere conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. Today I happened to be also able to chat with some counselors which is constantly a highlight of my day. College counselors are often high in information regarding students, their schools, and usually life generally speaking. It also reminds me personally of my high school days where I invested lot of time on my counselor’s couch.
How numerous coffee cups can you find in this photo?
My visit that is third today to a school i have never visited prior to. There were about eight students present plus one ended up being even using a USC t-shirt. This pupil, let us call him Brandon, said about his recent stop by at campus so we had a moment to gush over how pretty USC is. I adore sharing common USC experiences with https://shmoop.pro/ pupils, particularly whenever i am abroad.
Finally, between my third and fourth visit this early morning, I became in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the next highschool. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.
After my fifth and visit that is final, I returned to my resort, debriefed my day in the shape of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch through to some work. My first instinct is often to check my email. Oh look! I acquired an email from Brandon thanking me personally for my visit and asking a question about something I mentioned. Love when that occurs!
I hope to satisfy many of you as I carry on my travels! If there’s anything else you intend to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel free to leave concerns within the remark section and I am going to do my better to get back to you soon!
Mythbuster: I need to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice
The Myth: Attending university fairs, visits and tours will increase my likelihood of admission.
The Verdict: Not at USC.
Every August that is late/early, you can find 5 or so emails in my inbox each morning using the subject ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar general structure. ‘Hello Jessica- simply wanted to let you know that I visit ABC senior school, we play baseball and I can not wait to apply to USC. I’ve always wished to be a pupil in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but what am we supposed to express? Good fortune along with your baseball period? Every winter, I have comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me how their first semester went, they got the role that is lead the spring musical, and that USC remains their very first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.
At USC, we do not monitor students’s interest outside associated with actual application for admission choice purposes. Going to our programs is a way that is wonderful discover more about USC, but planning to an event or sending emails like those we described will not boost your chances of admission to the university.
As admission counselors, its true we are your main contact while you feel the admission process at USC and now we are happy to help you with any allow you to may need. However, students just benefit from trying to us they can’t find the answer online if they have specific questions- especially questions to which. I believe pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission that they HAVE to email.
So how will you show us which you’re enthusiastic about USC? in the place of spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your very best interest to utilize the period working on your a reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and opportunities you want to take advantage of at USC. in the place of emailing us your list of tasks, fill the activity Summary out thoroughly. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out much more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.
Remember that some schools may monitor demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach away to them, while other people may expect students within the area that is local visit campus. The notion of demonstrated interest differs, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.
At the conclusion of the day, we do want to see that you’re seriously considering being a student here that you are interested in USC and. The best way for you to articulate this interest is throughout your application.
